As adults we look on enviously as the young children who make up the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) spend the majority of their time playing and generally enjoying themselves. But it isn’t just frivolous fun. While burning seemingly endless energy, their play activities are also preparing them for the pre-teen years, adolescence and beyond into adult life. At this stage particularly, play allows children to interact with others, test ideas, think creatively, practice skills, learn from their mistakes and explore as well as imagine their surroundings.
