A Community Play Area Reimagined

Delivering a Safe, Inclusive, and Lasting Play Space

For over two decades, Kensworth’s playground served as a cherished space for local families. To revitalise the area and provide a fresh, inclusive experience for children of all abilities, Kensworth Parish Council worked with Caloo to reimagine the site with a long-term vision in mind.

Thanks to public funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, and contributions from local groups, the council was able to commission a high-quality installation with a bespoke design that promotes imagination, physical development, and inclusive play for children aged up to 12 years.

Highlights of the Installation

Caloo’s approach prioritised collaboration, consultation, and long-term value. The final playground design included:

  • Multiplay Centrepiece – A striking Quali Cite castle structure as the focal point.
  • Dynamic Play Features – Vinci Square Trampoline and Agility Trail to promote movement and coordination.
  • Inclusive Equipment – Vinci Wheelchair Roundabout and “You and Me” Swing enabling accessible and intergenerational play.
  • Sensory Elements – Bongo and Maze play panels for tactile and auditory engagement.
  • Additional Play Units – Crocodile and Knight springers, Dragon Duo Springer, and classic Vinci swings.
  • Community Amenities – A 1.8m steel bench with backrest to enhance usability for families.

Surfacing:
320.7m² of wetpour safety surfacing was laid in a colourful mix of Standard Green, Nike Sand Rubber, Water Blend, and Light Grey. Different depths were installed to comply with BS EN 1177 safety standards based on fall height requirements:

  • 175m² at 40mm thickness (1.36m fall height)
  • 119.6m² at 50mm thickness (1.65m fall height)
  • 25.9m² at 60mm thickness (2.04m fall height)

Results That Speak for Themselves

  • Increased Community Engagement – The new play area has become a vibrant hub for families.
  • Positive Feedback – Local parents, schools, and businesses praised the space as a valuable asset to village life.
  • Official Opening – Attended by Rachel Hopkins MP and local school children, the grand opening highlighted the excitement and impact of the installation.
  • Long-Term Value – The use of low-maintenance, durable materials ensures that the space will serve generations to come.
