MUGA's

A Multi Use Games Area (MUGA), is a fenced, hard-surfaced sports pitch, court or panel, designed for several sports on one footprint. They're installed in schools, parks, housing developments, community centres and recreation grounds. Options include MUGA fencing, rebound sports panels, multi-sport line markings, floodlights for evening play and goal-end or full-perimeter enclosures.

MUGA Design and Installation

Every MUGA project starts with our free design service. To work out what you need, we look at the sports you want to play, the user group, and the space available. We then produce CAD layouts showing court orientation, sports markings, fencing height and floodlight positions.
Our team handles MUGA construction in full, including groundworks, drainage, base, flooring, fencing, goal ends and floodlight masts. We stay with the project from initial survey through MUGA pitch construction to handover.

Industries

We supply MUGAs across four sectors, covering schools, multi-academy trusts, NHS settings, local and parish councils, housing developers, contractors, holiday parks and visitor attractions:

  • Education: primary, secondary, SEN schools, colleges and academies, where a MUGA playground or MUGA play area doubles as a sports lesson space and break-time games area.
  • Government: local authority parks, parish council recreation grounds and NHS settings.
  • Construction: architects, contractors and housing developers fitting out residential and mixed-use schemes.
  • Commercial: holiday parks, sports clubs, pubs and visitor attractions.

MUGA Regulations

MUGAs must comply with BS EN 15312, the British standard for free-access multi-sports equipment in schools, playgrounds and community areas. It covers structural strength, finger and head entrapment, ball rebound, fencing height and surfacing performance. Surfacing meets BS EN 1177 where impact attenuation applies. Line marking follows Sport England guidance and individual NGB requirements. We complete a post-installation RPII inspection on every project.

Project Funding and Support Advice

We provide free funding and support advice for schools, councils and community organisations developing MUGAs. Support covers bid writing, evidencing need, cost breakdown for grant applications and identifying funders. MUGAs often qualify for sport-specific funding that play and gym schemes don’t, particularly when NGB-compliant markings and floodlights are included. We work with you from initial scoping through to phased delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sports can be played on a MUGA?

A standard MUGA supports football, basketball, netball, tennis, hockey and 5-a-side, with markings for each. Larger schemes can also accommodate cricket nets and volleyball, and we often pair a MUGA with an outdoor table tennis table, typically a Butterfly outdoor table tennis table, for added activity.

Where can a MUGA be installed?

Anywhere with a level area of around 400m² or more, depending on size, including schools, parish council recreation grounds, parks, housing developments, holiday parks and community centres. We've installed MUGAs from compact 12m goal-end units up to triple courts of 50m × 30m.

Are Caloo MUGAs safety compliant?

Yes, every MUGA we install meets BS EN 15312, with surfacing to BS EN 1177 and RPII post-installation inspection. We supply manufacturer-certified systems and don't substitute components.

Can a MUGA be customised?

Yes, size, sport markings, fencing height, gates, colour, MUGA flooring and floodlighting can all be specified for the site. We don't manufacture bespoke equipment, but we configure off-the-shelf manufacturer systems to your brief.

Does a MUGA come with a guarantee?

Yes, manufacturer structural guarantees typically run 10–25 years on the cage, with shorter warranties on surfacing (5–10 years) and floodlights (manufacturer-dependent). We confirm specifics on every quote.

What is a MUGA football pitch?

A MUGA football pitch is a hard-surfaced, fenced Multi Use Games Area set up primarily for football, usually 5-a-side dimensions, with full-height rebound boards, goal ends and football-spec line markings. Other sports can be overlaid with additional markings.

How much does a MUGA pitch cost?

A MUGA cost typically ranges from around £15,000 for a single goal-end unit to £150,000+ for a full triple court with floodlights and synthetic turf. Pricing depends on size, MUGA surface, fencing and whether floodlights are included.

How long does it take to install MUGAs?

Most installs take four to eight weeks, depending on groundworks, drainage and surfacing cure times. Larger or floodlit schemes with civils can run ten to twelve weeks.
