SUDs Bond

SUDs Bond is a permeable bonded rubber surface that lets water pass straight through into the ground. We install it on Daily Mile tracks, paths and play areas where drainage is the problem, because it removes the need for gullies, falls and connection to a surface water system.

Why it matters

The Benefits of SUDs Bond

  • Water drains where it falls – The open structure lets rainfall pass straight into the ground below, so there is no standing water, no run-off and no gullies to design in.
  • Often removes the drainage cost – Because there is nothing to connect, projects that would need a drainage run and a soakaway frequently do not, which can offset a good part of the surfacing cost.
  • Water drains where it falls – The open structure lets rainfall pass straight into the ground below, so there is no standing water, no run-off and no gullies to design in.
  • Soft enough to run on – The bonded rubber has enough give for daily running and walking, which is why it has become the default surface for Daily Mile tracks.
  • Follows the ground it is laid on – It is trowelled to the existing contour, so slopes, tree roots and irregular routes are surfaced without regrading.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about specifying, installing and maintaining SUDs Bond.
What is SUDs Bond made of?

Recycled rubber granules mixed with a polyurethane resin and trowelled in place. The mix is deliberately open rather than sealed, which is what leaves the void space for water to pass through.

How permeable is SUDs Bond, in practice?

It handles typical UK rainfall intensities without surface water forming, provided the ground beneath drains. On heavy clay we usually add a stone drainage layer underneath, because a permeable surface over impermeable ground only moves the problem down a level.

Can SUDs Bond be used as a play surface?

Yes, at the right depth. Laid thicker it provides impact protection under equipment, and laid thinner it works as a path or track surface. The depth is set by whatever the surface sits under.

How does it compare to resin bound gravel?

Both are permeable and both are laid in place. SUDs Bond uses rubber, so it is softer, cheaper and better suited to running and play. Resin bound gravel uses stone, so it is harder, smoother and looks more formal, which suits entrances and main paths.

Does it need planning permission?

The surface itself does not, and being permeable it usually helps rather than hinders where surface water conditions apply. If the project involves a new hard surface over a significant area, it is worth checking, and we will raise it during design if it looks likely.
