Your One-Stop-Shop for Secondary School Outdoor Spaces

Equipment built for younger children gets ignored by teenagers, worn surfaces shut down sport for months, and a lack of seating can push students indoors. Our secondary school playground equipment ranges from outdoor gyms and all-weather MUGAs to skate zones and social shelters, and furniture. Our design, supply, install and maintain offering means you only need one point of contact, from concept to completion.

Our Process

How We Bring Your School's Outdoor Space to Life

From first site visit to long-term aftercare, our four-step process keeps your project simple, transparent and stress-free.

STEP 1 OF 4

Free Site Consultation

Every great outdoor space starts with a conversation. One of our experienced education specialists visits your site free of charge to understand how your students actually use the grounds, where the pressure points are at break and lunch, your PE and enrichment priorities, and your budget. Student voice matters at this age, so we encourage schools to involve their student council in shaping the brief.

STEP 2 OF 4

Bespoke 3D Design

Our in-house designers turn your brief into detailed 3D visuals and a scaled site plan, so you can see exactly how the space will look before a single spade hits the ground. For secondary sites that means zoning for different uses: active areas for sport and fitness, social spaces with seating and shelter, and clear circulation routes, all balanced against safety standards and budget and refined with you until it is exactly right.

STEP 3 OF 4

Expert Installation

Our directly employed, DBS-checked installation teams fit your project around the school calendar, often during holidays or weekends, and can phase larger projects around exam periods. Every installation is completed to the relevant British and European standards, and the site is left clean, safe and ready to use.

Providing outdoor gyms, playgrounds and safety surfacing to secondary schools across the UK

Our complete range is designed, supplied and installed in-house to the highest safety standards. Explore the categories most popular with secondary schools.

Playground Equipment

Challenge-led climbing structures, trim trails scaled for teenagers, table tennis tables and larger swings give older students age-appropriate ways to stay active and let off steam at social times. The right equipment reduces boredom at break, and boredom is where behaviour problems start.

Multiplay Units

For secondary settings, multiplay works best at the challenging end of the range: large-scale steel and robinia structures with demanding climbs, high decks and fast slides that respect how capable teenagers are. They suit schools from younger KS3 intakes, through to sixth forms wanting to get students outside.

Outdoor Gym Equipment

Outdoor gyms are the stand-out choice for secondary schools. Static and hydraulic fitness stations, callisthenics, and street workout rigs give students free access to strength and cardio training at break, lunch, and after school. With activity levels falling sharply in the teenage years, a fitness zone turns dead space into daily exercise.

MUGAs

A multi-use games area is the workhorse of a secondary site. All-weather surfacing, rebound fencing, floodlighting options and multi-sport markings support football, basketball, netball, tennis and hockey on one footprint, all year round. MUGAs protect curriculum PE from waterlogged fields and host fixtures and inter-form competitions.

Skate Park Equipment

Durable steel and composite ramps, quarter pipes, grind rails and banks give skaters, scooter riders and BMXers a legitimate space on site. Built for intensive use with minimal maintenance, a skate zone also gives schools a strong enrichment and after-school offer.

Youth Shelter by skate park

Outdoor Shelters & Furniture

Canopies and shelters create covered social and dining space that takes pressure off corridors and halls at break, while robust picnic benches, seating pods and outdoor classrooms support socialising, outdoor study and sixth-form areas. Heavy-duty steel and timber construction is specified to handle daily teenage use.

Safety Surfacing

The right surfacing makes a secondary site work harder. Polymeric and macadam sports surfacing delivers consistent ball bounce and grip for MUGAs, wetpour and rubber mulch provide impact protection around fitness and climbing equipment to BS EN 1177, and daily mile tracks and resin bound paths keep the whole site usable in all weathers. Durable, low-maintenance and built for heavy foot traffic.

Proven Success Stories

Get Funding

Secondary schools can draw on a range of funding streams, such as Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) bids, School Condition Allocations through your local authority or trust, Section 106 developer contributions, Sport England and more. Our team will guide you through what is available and help build a costed proposal to back your application.

The Benefits of Secondary School Playgrounds

Physical activity can drop in the teenage years. Purpose-built outdoor spaces give secondary schools a practical, visible way to fight that decline and unlock benefits that reach well beyond fitness.

More Student Activity

An outdoor gym or calisthenics rig turns break time into training time. A MUGA keeps sport running through winter. A skate zone reaches students who would never join a team. These spaces remove barriers to activity by meeting teenagers where they already are.

Improved Classroom Focus

Regular physical activity is linked to better concentration and improved sleep. Students who move at break return to lessons more alert and ready to learn, and the effects show up in academic results.

Stronger Mental Health

Exercise is one of the most effective tools for managing stress, anxiety and low mood. Giving students easy, informal access to physical activity during the school day supports both their health and wellbeing.

Stronger School Offer

Quality outdoor provision strengthens enrichment programmes and sixth form appeal. It signals to prospective families on open evenings that student wellbeing is taken seriously and invested in.

Reduces Indoor Friction

Sheltered seating and social furniture give students somewhere to decompress outdoors, reducing crowding inside and the tension that comes with it. Well-designed spaces also offer staff clear sightlines, making supervision easier and more effective.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

A glimpse of the secondary school outdoor spaces, MUGAs and fitness zones we have designed, supplied and installed across the UK.

What outdoor equipment is suitable for secondary school and teenage students?+
The strongest performers are outdoor gyms and calisthenics rigs, MUGAs for multi-sport use, skate park equipment, table tennis tables, challenge-led climbing structures and social furniture with shelter. The common thread is age-appropriate challenge and social space rather than traditional play, which teenagers quickly outgrow.
What is a MUGA and is it suitable for a secondary school?+
A MUGA (multi-use games area) is a fenced, all-weather court marked out for several sports, typically football, basketball, netball and tennis, on one surface. It is arguably the best single investment a secondary school can make outdoors: it protects PE from bad weather, supports fixtures and social play, and can be let to the community outside school hours.
Do outdoor gyms and calisthenics equipment work for secondary schools?+
Yes, exceptionally well. Students use them voluntarily at break and lunch, PE departments use them for fitness units and GCSE PE, and they engage teenagers who avoid team sport. Calisthenics and street workout rigs in particular carry real credibility with older students because they mirror what they see in gyms and online.
How much does a MUGA or outdoor fitness area cost for a secondary school?+
It depends on size, surfacing and specification. Smaller fitness zones start from a few thousand pounds, while a full-size fenced MUGA with sports surfacing is a more significant investment, typically in the tens of thousands. Every Caloo project is designed to your budget, and we provide free site visits and itemised quotes so you know exactly what your money delivers.
What surfacing is best for secondary school sports and games areas?+
For MUGAs and sports areas, polymeric rubber surfacing offers the best all-round performance, with consistent bounce, grip and player comfort; macadam is a durable, lower-cost alternative. Around fitness and climbing equipment, impact-absorbing wetpour or rubber mulch certified to BS EN 1177 is the right choice.
How durable is outdoor equipment against vandalism and heavy use?+
Our secondary school ranges are specified for exactly this environment: galvanised and powder-coated steel frames, tamper-proof fixings, anti-vandal fixtures and hard-wearing surfacing built for constant daily use. Combined with annual inspections and responsive aftercare, equipment stays safe and presentable for many years even on the busiest sites.
How long does it take to install a MUGA or fitness zone at a secondary school?+
A typical fitness zone takes around one to two weeks on site, while a full MUGA with groundworks, surfacing and fencing usually takes two to four weeks depending on size and ground conditions. We schedule work during holidays or around exam periods and confirm a clear timeline as part of your quote.
