What playground equipment is suitable for early years, nursery and reception-age children?+

Equipment should sit at toddler height with gentle challenge and plenty of ground-level access. Beyond that, we design in low fall heights, secure boundary fencing and self-closing gates, shade and shelter, non-slip surfaces, and clear sightlines so staff can supervise the whole area at a glance. How does outdoor play support development for young children?+

Outdoor play develops gross and fine motor skills, balance and coordination, language through shared play, confidence, independence and early problem-solving. It maps directly onto the EYFS framework's prime areas, particularly physical development, communication and language, and personal, social and emotional development, and gives children experiences that are hard to replicate indoors.

What is the minimum recommended space for an early years outdoor play area?+

The EYFS statutory framework does not set a fixed square-metre minimum for outdoor space. Instead, it requires that group and school-based providers give children daily access to a suitable outdoor play area, or, where that is not possible, that outdoor activities are planned and taken daily. Indoor space standards (3.5m² per child under two, 2.5m² for two-year-olds and 2.3m² for three to five-year-olds) are sometimes used as a guide for mainly outdoor provision. In practice, we design around whatever footprint you have to make every square metre work hard.

How much does an early years playground cost to install?+

Cost depends on the size of the space, the equipment specified and the amount of surfacing and ground works involved. A small equipment refresh with new safety surfacing is very different from a full nursery custom built playground. As a rough guide, projects typically range from a few thousand pounds for a compact scheme up to larger tailored installations. What maintenance does nursery playground equipment need?+

Our equipment is built to be low-maintenance and hard-wearing. Day to day, staff carry out quick visual checks for wear, damage or hazards. Beyond that, we recommend periodic operational checks and an annual main inspection by a qualified RPII inspector, all of which Caloo can provide through our aftercare service, along with any servicing or repairs.

How often should nursery and early years playground equipment be inspected?+

Best practice under BS EN 1176-7 sets out three levels of inspection: routine visual checks (frequent, often daily or weekly for busy nursery sites), operational inspections (typically every one to three months), and an annual main inspection by a qualified RPII inspector. High-use early years equipment usually warrants more frequent visual checks. Our aftercare team can manage the full schedule for you.
