Requirements depend on pupil numbers, age range and your site, and are guided by Building Bulletin 103, which sets out recommended area formulae for informal and social play, hard-surfaced games areas and soft outdoor PE (allowing around 35m² per KS2 pupil for playing-field provision). In practice we design around whatever space you have, from compact urban yards to large fields, to make every square metre count.

What compliance does primary school playground equipment need to have?+

Playground equipment should be manufactured and installed to BS EN 1176, the British and European standard for playground equipment, and impact-absorbing surfacing should meet BS EN 1177. Schools also have a duty of care under health and safety law to keep equipment safe through regular inspection and maintenance. How often should primary school playground equipment be inspected?+

Best practice under BS EN 1176-7 sets out three levels of inspection: routine visual checks (frequent, often daily or weekly for busy school sites), operational inspections (typically every one to three months), and an annual main inspection by a qualified RPII inspector.
