A Free-to-Use Outdoor Gym for the Bedford Community

The Vision

Bedford Borough Council sought to enhance the fitness opportunities available in Pilgrims Park by installing an outdoor gym that would be free to use and accessible to all. The objective was to create a fitness hub for individuals and groups, providing a mix of outdoor gym equipment and a fitness frame to cater to varied workout styles and abilities.

The Solution

Caloo designed and installed an inclusive, multi-functional outdoor gym, featuring a combination of resistance, strength, and cardiovascular training equipment.

Key installations included:

  • Starter Bundle 3 – Four versatile fitness units providing cardio and strength training options.
  • Accessible Chin-Up and Limb Stretcher – Encouraging flexibility, mobility, and upper-body strength.
  • Accessible Seatless Chest Press and Lat Pull Combi – Offering dual-function strength training for upper-body development.
  • Multi-User Street Workout 2324 – A functional fitness frame designed for calisthenics and bodyweight training.
  • Mulch Bond Safety Surfacing – Providing a stable, impact-absorbing base to ensure year-round usability.
  • Benches – Offering seating areas for rest and social interaction.

Pilgrims Park is a publicly accessible community park, careful planning and site management were required to ensure public safety during installation.

  • Protective fencing was installed to create a safe working environment for the team while preventing public access to the construction area.
  • The project was executed efficiently to minimise disruption and ensure the space was ready for public use as soon as possible.

The Impact

The new outdoor gym has been a major success, seeing regular use from people of all ages and abilities.

  • The gym provides free and inclusive fitness opportunities, ensuring accessibility for everyone in the community.
  • The combination of gym equipment and the street workout frame allows users to engage in cardiovascular, strength, and toning exercises all in one location.
  • The Mulch Bond surfacing ensures a durable, low-maintenance foundation, making the gym safe and accessible throughout the year.

Pilgrims Park now offers a dynamic outdoor fitness space, helping to promote health and well-being in the local community for years to come.
