Creating an Inclusive and Imaginative Play Space

The Vision

Pioneer School, a Special Educational Needs (SEN) school, wanted to create a fully inclusive, imaginative outdoor play space tailored to children with physical and learning additional needs. The existing play area had become unusable, with outdated equipment and limited accessibility due to built-up planters restricting movement.

The school sought a bespoke solution that would provide a meaningful and interactive play experience for all children, ensuring wheelchair accessibility without relying on traditional ramps.

The Solution

Caloo worked closely with Pioneer School to design and install a custom, castle-themed play unit that would offer an engaging and inclusive play experience.

Key installations included:

  • A central castle play unit, uniquely designed to allow wheelchair users to access the space centrally, rather than using standard ramps.
  • A sensory tower, accessible to children of all abilities, providing tactile and visual engagement.
  • Shop front role-play area and an accessible car, encouraging imaginative play and social interaction.
  • A sensory path, leading up to the play panels, offering textured experiences for sensory development.
  • New, fully accessible surfacing, ensuring safe and barrier-free movement for all users.

The Impact

The new inclusive play space has transformed Pioneer School’s outdoor environment, providing a stimulating and imaginative area where children of all abilities can engage, explore, and play together.

  • The castle theme inspires creative storytelling and role-play.
  • The sensory elements encourage engagement, helping children with additional needs develop sensory awareness and motor skills.
  • The fully accessible design ensures every child can participate, fostering a more inclusive and social environment.

This thoughtfully designed play area will continue to provide fun, learning, and development opportunities for Pioneer School’s pupils for years to come.
