A Multi-Use Play Space for All Ages From Vision to Reality at King George V Playing Fields

The Vision

Sarratt Parish Council, in collaboration with Three Rivers District Council, aimed to create a dynamic, inclusive, and multi-functional play space that would engage children of all ages. While retaining elements of skateboarding, the project’s focus expanded to include a broader range of play and sports facilities.

The Solution

Caloo designed and delivered a vibrant, all-inclusive play space featuring a standout three-tower multi-play unit with an integrated zip line, providing an exhilarating play experience. This centrepiece includes two slides connected by a climbing wall, a wobble bridge leading to the zip line tower, easy-access steps with handholds, climbing nets, and a fireman’s pole.

To ensure accessibility and inclusivity, wet-pour surfacing was installed throughout, enabling safe play for all abilities. Key inclusive features include:

  • A supportive back springer for additional stability.
  • A double-width slide allowing for side-by-side play between carers and children or friends.
  • An inclusive basket swing for shared play experiences.

A dedicated toddler multi-play unit was introduced for younger children, promoting independent exploration. Additional dynamic play equipment, such as a seated roundabout, rotating see-saw, and swings, were installed to provide movement-based fun.

Alongside the play area, a new kick-about zone was developed, featuring a multi-use sports wall and a table tennis table, creating a social hub for older children and teenagers. A teen shelter was also installed to provide a space for relaxation and spectating. The transformation was completed with a half-pipe skate ramp, which has quickly become a community favourite.

Key Considerations

Construction began in winter, meaning wet weather and saturated ground presented challenges throughout. However, our experienced team worked efficiently to navigate these conditions, ensuring the project was delivered on schedule and to the highest standard.

The Impact Since its completion in the summer of 2023, the newly transformed King George V Playing Fields has become a thriving recreational space where toddlers, children, and teenagers can play, exercise, and socialise safely. The combination of play, sports, and skate facilities ensures that the space will be enjoyed by the local community for years to come.
