The Vision
Harrow Council wanted a large triple MUGA at West Harrow Recreation Ground. The aim was a genuine multi-sport space, not a single-use court. The brief called for a 2,700 m² multi-use games area. It’s laid out as two football and multi-use areas plus a dedicated netball court, with tennis line markings layered across the site so several sports and user groups can use the facility at once.
Key objectives for this Harrow Council MUGA included:
- A large triple MUGA covering 2,700 m² (90m x 30m): two football/multi-use areas plus a netball court.
- A genuine range of sports across the site: football, basketball, tennis and netball.
- A durable macadam playing surface with line markings for every sport.
- A secure, fenced facility for residents, schools and local sports groups to use.
The Solution
First, Caloo cleared the site and removed the existing fencing, cutting old posts off at ground level. Caloo then laid a 40mm macadam overlay across the full 2,700 m² (90m x 30m) area. It’s finished in non-slip acrylic green paint, with line markings for every sport. Finally, Caloo enclosed the facility in championship-spec weld mesh fencing, from 3m up to 4m high. The twin wire system includes recessed goal ends throughout.
Key installations included:
- Championship-spec weld mesh fencing, 3m/4m high, twin wire system with championship sports rebound mesh
- Recessed goal ends
- Macadam surfacing with non-slip acrylic green paint and line markings for every sport
Key Considerations
The installation took place inside a community park with public access 24/7. Caloo installed protective fencing around the work area to keep the team safe and limit public access while building. The old fencing was removed first, with existing posts cut off at ground level rather than dug out. A site compound with welfare facilities stayed on site throughout the build.
The Impact
Overall, the new triple MUGA has been a great success with the local community. It gives residents, schools and sports groups a genuine range of sports on their own doorstep. The bold green macadam surfacing gives the site an exciting new look. Layered football, basketball, tennis and netball markings mean far more user groups can use the facility. That’s far more than a single court would ever allow.
Project outcomes included:
- A genuine multi-sport facility used by residents, schools and sports groups alike.
- A 2,700 m² triple MUGA covering football, basketball, tennis and netball.
- A bold green surfacing design that transformed the look of the site.
- A secure, fully-fenced facility open to the whole community.
Why Caloo Was Chosen
- A genuinely multi-sport layout across 2,700 m²: two football/multi-use areas plus a netball court with tennis markings layered in.
- Site safety managed throughout a live, 24/7 public park, including clean removal of the old fencing before work began.
- Championship sports rebound fencing with recessed goal ends built in as standard, finished in durable, non-slip acrylic green surfacing.
