An Inclusive Playground Refresh For The Whole Community

The Vision

Weston Turville Parish Council wanted to refresh this Weston Turville play area, replacing worn, dated equipment with something more accessible and inclusive for the whole community.

In addition to updating tired equipment, the council wanted the play area to genuinely serve toddlers and wheelchair users alongside older children.

Key objectives of the Weston Turville play area included:

  • Replacing two worn springers with new units.
  • Removing an ageing timber swing frame and replacing it with a steel-framed cradle swing.
  • Adding a play unit suitable for both toddlers and wheelchair users.
  • Extending and reconnecting safety surfacing around the new equipment.

The Solution

First, Caloo installed a Quali-Cité Accessible Multiplay unit with Castle Playhouse, giving toddlers and wheelchair users a play unit they could enjoy together. In addition, Caloo replaced the two old springers with a Quali-Cité RE 210 horse springer and a Quali-Cité RE 333 bee springer, and removed the site’s ageing timber swing frame in favour of a Quali-Cité Essential Cradle Swing on a steel frame. Finally, Caloo extended the wetpour safety surfacing and pathways to connect it all together.

Key installations included:

  • Quali-Cité Accessible Multiplay unit with Castle Playhouse
  • Quali-Cité RE 210 horse springer
  • Quali-Cité RE 333 bee springer
  • Quali-Cité Essential Cradle Swing (steel frame)
  • Wetpour safety surfacing

Key Considerations

Because the new equipment replaced existing units rather than filling an empty site, Caloo first removed the old wetpour surfacing and grass matting, then prepared the ground with new stone baseworks before the new safety surfacing could go down.

Additional considerations included:

  • Removing existing wetpour and grass matting before rebuilding the surfacing base.
  • Preparing new stone baseworks to properly support the replacement surfacing.
  • Keeping the site secured with HERAS fencing throughout the works.

The Impact

Overall, this Weston Turville play area now gives toddlers and wheelchair users genuine access to play alongside everyone else, backed by safer, freshly prepared surfacing.

Project outcomes included:

  • Accessible play equipment that toddlers and wheelchair users can enjoy together.
  • Modern springers and a new swing replacing worn, outdated equipment.
  • Safer, properly prepared surfacing connecting the whole play area.

Why Caloo Was Chosen

  • A genuinely accessible play unit, designed for toddlers and wheelchair users together, not a standard multiplay unit with accessibility as an afterthought.
  • Proper groundworks, removing old surfacing and grass matting and laying new stone baseworks, rather than resurfacing over an unprepared base.
  • A fully managed installation, from site fencing and delivery through to a post-installation inspection.
