The Inclusive Communication Totem brings emotions, images and braille together on one freestanding post. Children slide coloured counters to show how they feel. They can also explore bright emoji plant-ons and raised braille lettering. Because the totem combines touch, sight and communication in one activity, it works well for children with a wide range of needs.
Key features of the Inclusive Communication Totem
- Coloured sliders that let children select and show an emotion
- Bright, raised emoji plant-ons for easy visual recognition
- Engraved braille lettering for touch-based learning
- Accessible layout positioned for children of different heights and abilities
The totem’s sliding counters give children a hands-on way to say how they feel without needing words. This suits children who are non-verbal or who find it hard to explain their emotions out loud. Meanwhile, the engraved braille panels let visually impaired children explore letters by touch. Because the totem mixes several ways to communicate, most children find at least one part they can use confidently.
Schools and SEN settings often place this totem at the entrance to a playground or in a quiet corner for emotional check-ins. Staff can use it to start a conversation with a child who is struggling to communicate. As a result, it supports both free play and more structured emotional wellbeing work across the school day.
Built to last
The Inclusive Communication Totem is built to the BS EN 1176 playground equipment standard, so schools and councils can specify it with confidence. Two colour HDPE panels resist weather, impact and fading. An extruded aluminium edge beam with a powder coat finish keeps the totem rigid and corrosion resistant. Caloo supplies the totem as part of a wider range of play panels, so it can stand alone or anchor a larger inclusive play area.
