Why it matters

The Benefits of Playground Seesaws

A seesaw is one of the few pieces of playground equipment that simply cannot be used alone, making it a natural teacher of cooperation and turn taking. Add in the physical workout of pushing off and balancing, and it earns its place in any play space.
  • Teaches Cooperation From the First Bounce – Seesaws need a partner, so children learn to communicate, share and work together to make the fun happen.
  • Builds Leg Strength and Balance – Pushing off the ground and staying steady mid-air develops leg muscles, core strength and body awareness.
  • Inclusive Options for Every Child – Wheelchair-accessible and DDA-compliant seesaws let children of all abilities enjoy rocking play together.
  • Designs for Every Age Group – From gentle spring seesaws for toddlers to older years and multi-seat designs, there is a seesaw for every playground.
  • A Compact, Affordable Classic – A seesaw delivers social, physical and sensory play with a small footprint and a modest budget.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about specifying, installing and maintaining Seesaws.
What types of playground seesaws are available?

We supply classic two-seat spring seesaws, themed designs including canoe, crab, horse and longboat seesaws, three-seat and four-seat multi-user units, rotating seesaws and wheelchair accessible designs. Timber and steel options suit different settings.

What is a spring seesaw?

A spring seesaw uses heavy duty steel springs instead of a central pivot, giving a softer, bouncier rocking motion with no hard impact at either end. This makes them a popular choice for early years and mixed-age playgrounds.

Are seesaws suitable for inclusive playgrounds?

Yes. Our wheelchair seesaw designs let wheelchair users rock alongside friends, and DDA compliant models like our Rabbit and Fox seesaw feature supportive seats and handholds so children of all abilities can play together.

Are playground seesaws safe for young children?

Modern seesaws are designed and tested to BS EN 1176, with sprung bases, soft stops and supportive seats that prevent the sudden drops of older designs. We will recommend age-appropriate models for your setting as part of your design.

Does a playground seesaw require safety surfacing?

Yes. Impact-absorbing surfacing to BS EN 1177 is required beneath and around a seesaw. We supply and install wetpour, rubber mulch and rubber grass mats, and we calculate the correct fall zones as part of your design.

Can a seesaw be added to an existing playground?

Absolutely. A seesaw's compact footprint makes it an easy addition to most layouts, and our free design service will show you where it fits best within your current play area.
