The best wooden climbing frame for outdoor use is one built from pressure-treated timber, fixed on galvanised ground shoes rather than set directly into the soil, and sized to the age group using it. For most primary schools we recommend a double deck tower with a slide and mixed climbing access, as it gives the widest range of play in a manageable footprint. For parks and Early Years settings, single deck towers work better.
A well-specified, pressure-treated timber unit will typically last 15 to 20 years outdoors when it is inspected annually and maintained properly. Ground-level fixings and drainage make more difference to lifespan than the timber grade alone.
Expect an annual visual inspection, periodic re-tightening of fixings, and a check of ground-contact points. Timber may weather to a silver-grey finish over time, which is cosmetic rather than structural. We offer an aftercare service that covers inspections and any remedial work.
Timber suits schools that want a natural look and a softer visual impact. Steel suits very high-traffic sites where the lowest possible maintenance is the priority. Both deliver comparable play value, and we are happy to quote for each so you can compare properly.
The surfacing depth is set by the unit's Critical Fall Height, which is driven by the highest deck. Wet pour rubber, bonded rubber mulch and play grass all work well, with rubber mulch being a popular pairing for timber because of the natural finish. We calculate and install the correct surfacing as part of the project.
Yes. We can specify ramped access, wider decks, ground-level activity panels and transfer points, and combine timber towers with inclusive play equipment so children of all abilities have something to use.
