Playground Equipment

Playground equipment is the foundation of any outdoor play space, supporting child development, physical activity, social interaction and inclusion. As playground equipment suppliers, we supply and install a wide range of outdoor playground equipment for schools, SEN settings, councils and community sites, including multiplay units, swings, trim trails, climbing frames, playground equipment slides, spinning and sensory items. Choosing the right mix is led by age, space and use.

Playground Design and Installation

Every project includes our free play space design service. We assess the site, surfacing, sightlines and access, then produce CAD layouts and a costed proposal. The service suits any scheme, such as climbing equipment layout, a school playground design refresh, trim trail for schools, or a full council-led community space. Our in-house playground equipment installers carry out groundworks, fitting, surfacing and post-install inspection.
To work out what you need, we start with three questions: who’s using it, what’s already on site, and what do you want it to achieve.

Industries

We work across four main sectors, covering schools, multi-academy trusts, NHS settings, local and parish councils, housing developers, contractors, holiday parks, pubs and visitor attractions:

  • Education: school playground equipment for primary, secondary, SEN settings and any curriculum-linked outdoor learning.
  • Government: local authority parks, parish council schemes and NHS therapeutic spaces.
  • Construction: architects, main contractors and housing developers fitting out new schemes.
  • Commercial: holiday parks, visitor attractions, pubs and retail destinations.

Playground Equipment Regulations

All our outdoor playground equipment is manufactured, installed and inspected to BS EN 1176, the British standard for playground equipment for schools, playgrounds and community areas.
Impact-attenuating surfacing is supplied to BS EN 1177 with the correct critical fall height for each item. We provide RPII post-installation reports and supply playground equipment signs detailing age suitability and supervision where required.

Project Funding and Support Advice

We help schools, councils and community organisations secure funding for playground and fitness projects. Support covers bid writing, evidencing need, cost breakdowns for grant applications and identifying suitable funders.
It’s useful for any group facing a budget gap, and we can work with you from initial scoping through to phased delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of playground equipment does Caloo supply?

We supply a broad range of playground equipment, including SEN and inclusive play equipment, climbing equipment, trim trail, imaginative play, swings, slides, roundabouts and spinners, springers, seesaws, inground trampolines, play panels and sensory playground equipment. Both natural playground equipment and steel options are available to suit aesthetics and budget.

Do I need to know exactly the type of equipment I want before contacting Caloo?

No - most clients start with a budget, a site and an age group, and we recommend a layout from there. A clear brief helps, but isn't essential.

Does Caloo install the playground equipment?

Yes, our in-house playground equipment installers fit every project we supply. Installation covers groundworks, equipment fitting, surfacing and a post-completion inspection.

What is the British standard for outdoor playground equipment?

BS EN 1176 covers playground equipment and BS EN 1177 covers impact-attenuating surfacing. All our equipment is manufactured, installed and inspected to these standards.

What playground equipment is best for older kids?

For 8+ and teen users we recommend taller playground climbing frames, monkey bars, basket swings, spinning items and trim trail equipment that challenges balance and strength. Mixed-height multiplay with rope nets, climbing walls and slides also works well.

What to include in a playground?

A balanced playground combines climbing, sliding, swinging, spinning, social and imaginative play (play panels and themed multiplay) and a quiet sensory or seating zone. The mix depends on age range, available space and accessibility requirements.

How much maintenance does playground equipment need?

Visual checks weekly, operational checks monthly and an annual RPII inspection are the standard requirement. Properly installed equipment needs only minor attention to fastenings and moving parts between inspections.

How long does it take to install playground equipment?

Most school and community installs take one to three weeks on site, subject to groundworks, surfacing and equipment volume. Larger or bespoke schemes typically run four to six weeks.
